“Michael Coughlan works with wry humor and unexpected logic to upturn familiar horizons and spark fresh connections. His work is slippery by design and sometimes I wonder if that may be its point.

He subverts the sobriety of logic and the sincerity of structure with a hint of farce. His work is concise, disciplined and populated with common objects turned slightly on their head. By combining culturally nondescript things in specific ways he’s able to uncompress and transform the commonplace.

There’s a credible, stripped-down sure-footedness to his work that feels at home in the thin-aired realm of ideas. It’s from this place that Coughlan lets his conceptual constructions crack or resonate under the weight of their own logic. What gets revealed during this stress and friction is the strange ability to experience novelty among familiar things.

Moreover, this unique capacity spotlights our interpretive processes as primarily active and creative rather than passive or generic. In this way, Coughlan’s work helps to humanize the narrow bridge that connects art and conceptual shenanigans, making the playful and absurd feel accessible and meaningful.”

Songs about UFOs, curated by Michael Coughlan, is a summer exhibition loosely based on themes of UFO’s, sci-fi landscapes, paranormal activity, psychic capability, alternative music, and wanderlust. The group exhibit will feature works by Amy Russell, Dave Muller, Tyler Vlahovich, Amy Sarkisian, Jimmy Raskin, Adam Ross, Margo Victor, Michael Coughlan and Kent Young. The opening reception takes place on June 10, 2023 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at gallery IDOLWILD and will be on view through July 15, 2023.

Coughlan explains, “The idea for this exhibit grew out of a conversation I had with artist Jimmy Raskin regarding UFOs and how they occupy a place of displaced spirituality for many who have stories of encountering them, and skeptical intrigue for the culture at large. Using that as a jumping off point, the artists in this exhibit represent my own discursive meanderings, associations, and creative misapprehensions in regard to UFOs, spirituality, and parallels between them and contemporary art practice.”

The title, “Songs About UFOs,” is Michael Coughlan’s misremembered title of a song by the band Husker Du, whose name ironically means “Do you remember?” in Norwegian.

IDOLWILD is a unique artist-run gallery space dedicated to Contemporary Art and Design in the heart of Los Angeles’ Lincoln Heights district. Founded by artist and visual designer H. Micke Nelson Tong, this creative platform nestled in the Keystone Art Space building presents solo and group exhibitions, installations, and public performance.
The gallery is located at 338 S. Avenue 16, studio A4, Los Angeles, California, 90031.  Gallery hours are Thursday through Saturday 1:00pm to 4:00pm and by appointment. For more information please contact Micke Tong at 415-424-6538 or

3rd Artstamp Edition!

Artstamp.dk is excited to present a set of six new stamps by Los Angeles artist Michael Coughlan.

These new stamps include images taken from Coughlan’s suite of charcoal drawings Laconic Distillations - Psychic Landscape Series.

In these works Coughlan continues his exploration of material and form, combining art historical and cultural tropes as filtered through his own idiosyncratic sensibility. The resulting images have a psychological tension, immediacy, and sense of humor that can be seen as an attempt to describe and deconstruct a contemporary human condition.

More than simply hybrids or blends of modernism, surrealism or conceptual art, Coughlan’s work moves beyond tribute iconography by tapping his existing surroundings in Los Angeles and own mortality. Lost desert landscapes unfold with new meaning when the literal translation of content or glorified remembrance of a specific art style is emptied out, jiggled up and poured back in.

Michael Coughlan’s solo exhibitions have been seen in Europe, Los Angeles and New York. He earned an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in 1991 and a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design for Painting in 1988. He is the recipient of a Pollack Krasner Foundation grant (1996) and was a resident artist at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida 2011.

Michael Coughlan has exhibited several times at Stalke Gallery over the years.
